Fast paced ground ball to transition drill emphasizing "GB - Pass - Pass"

  • Create 3 lines of kids at the end line behind the goal and outside the box
  • Create 2 lines of kids to be used as transition players (on the same side line of the field)

  • X1, X2, X3 all fight for the ball (every man for themselves)
  • Whoever wins passes to the first line of transitions players and that man passes to the second line of transition players
  • Right away the two in the line that lost play again 1v1, the winner passes to the next transition
  • Finally the guy that lost twice, does it 1v0 and passes to the next transition

10 Min Diamond 2 Man Game

This drill is an on the crease two man game with two defenders. The objective of the drill is to pass the ball around the goal and make a pass to an inside guy who is cutting or picking to get open.

  • This drill involves at least 8 players
  • Setup 4 players in a diamond pattern around the goal (with the top player near the top of the box)
  • Put 2 offense and 2 defenders in the crease
  • Add a goalie
  • The 4 diamond passing guys pass the ball around the goal, holding it for a few seconds
  • The inside offensive guys look to set picks, do picks and rolls, and to play the 2 man game
  • Defense is reacting to where the ball is with sticks up
  • The outside players look to feed an inside guy (they cannot shoot the ball)
  • Players on the inside should play for about 45 seconds then rotate (if a goal is scored outside players grab another ball)
  • Defense should keep sticks up, check sticks, look to intercept, talk to each other

15 Min 2 Stations - Attack & Defense

Middie Lines will break up and move to both defense and attack stations

Attack - To work on Yellow and Potato - Tim

  • 3 attack run the plays
  • 3 middies play defense
  • Put a goalie in net (Paul)
  • Offense works on soft hand shots and driving from behind

Defense - Slide and recovering Matt & Mark

  • Talk about sliding and recovering and why its important

Stacked Sliding Drill

Teaching kids defensive slide sets is important but difficult to implement in a game due to the chaos. An important principle for defenders to learn is how to slide and recover.

  • 4 offensive players in the four corners
  • Put a goalie in cage and put 3 defenders stacked in a straight lin in the middle of from the crease
  • Assign a number 1,2,3 to each of the defenders or call out their names
  • The offense should move the ball, keep spacing, and shoot only off a pass across the crease or skip pass
  • The defense will have to come out and slide to the ball and recover. The coach calls a number 1,2,3 and the designated player with that number is the player who must make the slide and recover
  • As the ball is passed, a coach calls another different number and the assigned player slides aggressively to the ball.
  • The first defender recovers to the inside hole, stick to the inside and in the passing lane, with head up looking for the next dangerous guy

15 Min The 1-2-3 Drill

http://www.laxcoachmike.com/fullmembers/2010/12/article-coach-garber-1-2-3-get-game-ready/

The drill helps players prepare to be game ready. It forces a situation of a man advantage and makes the defense adjust to slide, recover, and fill.

  • Put a goalie in the net.
  • This is a 6v6 drill with 3 attack and 3 offensive middies, 3 defenders and 3 defensive middies
  • Give a number to each of the 3 defenders (1,2,3) and each of the defensive middies (1,2,3). Only the defensive players are given numbers
  • The drill begins with a GB or pass to an offensive player
  • Following a short period of play, the coach yells out a number for example "Middie 1"
  • The players need to think and react, if the player "Middie 1" is covering the ball, then he must exit the field through the box (or midfield) and either be replaced by another "middie 1" or run back onto the field
  • If "Middie 1" is is off ball, he must immediately leave his offensive player and double the ball.
  • This forces the defensive players to be ready as their roles change to slide, recover, and fill until we are at even strength

15 Min Mule Drill

http://www.laxcoachmike.com/fullmembers/2015/08/article-the-mule-drill-pfeiffer/

This is a 4v4 drill which incorporates GB, 4v4, and Lock Off Drill

  • Put a goalie in cage
  • Divide kids evenly into two different colors
  • Place 1 of each color at the 4 corners
  • Roll a ball and a 1v1 GB happens, whoever wins the GB is on offense
  • The 3 off ball defense "lock on" their man. This forces the 3 other offensive players to work hard at getting open
  • Each of the 4 offensive players must touch the ball before going to cage
  • Offense must look to set picks and work together to get open
  • Make it competitive, offense gets 2 points for scoring, defense gets 1 for stopping play
