10 Min No Second Chances Ground Balls

Often times a player gets a first chance at a ground ball while unchallenged, but they often fail to field it cleanly and that is when the crowd joins in.

  • Partner up with one ball, a chaser and receiver
  • Coach rolls out the ball, receiver runs for it, chaser chases after 1 second
  • The receiver does not look back, he runs straight for the ball
  • Chaser attempts to poke or lift check the receiver when he is scooping
  • The receiver has to adjust his body to protect the back hand
  • The receiver runs to daylight and passes back to coach
  • If the chaser successfully disrupts the scoop he should box out and flick the ball to open space and then get the ground ball

10 Min Steal the Bacon

  • No rakes, slapping sticks, only scooping through and keeping the ball moving forward. You lose if you do bad things
  • Divide the team into two groups (Dark and Light)
  • Have the lineup in the restraining line on either side of the box in a single file line
  • Coach has the balls in the middle of the field
  • Put a goalie in the cage
  • Coach calls out two numbers (2 and 2) and two guys go from each line
  • Coach can call 1 v 1, 2 v 1, 3 v 2, etc
  • The coach rolls out the ball and they compete, whoever gets the ball goes to score
  • Keep score and keep it competitive.

Middies

Midfield Plant and Shoot

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mg6thX47Yh0

  • Have your midfielders get together
  • Have two lines at the top of the box, put balls on one side
  • Line without the ball cuts towards the goal and center at a diagonal, the player runs with their stick forward
  • The ball line throws a pass, the receiver plants and in one motion, stops turns back, switches hands, and turns again and shoots. This can also be called the rocker shot
  • Repeat from both sides

Defense

Long Pole Clears

  • Have a goalie and 3 defense on the field
  • Have them close to the crease and a coach with balls a few yards out
  • Coach takes a shot, goalie calls clear
  • Two defensemen go low at GLE
  • One defenseman goes to side crease
  • Goalie passes to a defensmen, then they redirect and keep going up field, the crease def breaks up field and receives a pass from one of the side guys
10 Min 3 on 3 Midfield Lock On Drill

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jV9FYV_jXnc

A great drill to work on when your middies fail to get to the midline and ride against clearing middies. This teaches them to run back to the midline and then lock on their man, when a pass is made, the must get back to the hole and recover.

  • Put a goalie in the goal
  • The drill starts at the midfield line
  • The coach starts at the midline with the balls
  • The defense midfielders must stay with their man, while the offensive midfields look to get open for a pass from the coach
  • When the ball is passed the 3 offense guys run to the goal and the defensive guy runs to defend. The defensive guys must make sure they recover properly to the hole.
  • Keep score with a whiteboard
  • Flag motion 1-2 seconds straight then move towards the end lines
  • Maverick - middie cuts back to the end line and turn to the outside as its least likely to get doubled
  • Pinch - if the defensive player is running up the side, the middie clears through but staying onside (keeping the way clear)
  • Deep - the two middies run deep and the goalie tries to hit them

30 Min 7 on 7 short field or 6 on 6 half field
