Coaching Outside the Box: Applying the 20/80 Rule to practice planning - Jonathan Basti - Sacred Heart University
Using new ideas to teach the fundamentals of your program
The 20/80 Rule
- The Pareto principle states that for many outcomes roughly 80% of the consequences come from 20% of the causes
- Everything you do has a purpose, what is the focus for each drill, each practice, each week
- The same drill can have multiple purposes
- Concept based vs Set based
- Order out of chaos
- comfortable being uncomfortable
The Rondo (Lacrosse Style)
- The rondo is the basic mindset of any offensive or defensive principle
- a soccer drill
- They have taken the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lu5sIKJ1Guk soccer drills
5/6 Lines Perimeter passing A realistic stickwork drill that is meant to simulate actual dodging hard, clearing space for the ball carrier, moving the ball on the run
- players will move the ball to every other line, but will run to the adjacent lines
- The adjacent guy will clear through/set picks to the line where the ball comes from
- You can add a 6th line to simulate the action of a crease guy or "open" concepts
4 on 0 ground ball drill
- Everyone starts at the top right, 3 guys hustle to adjacent spot, first guy in line picks it up
- get ground ball, move it, move it, move it, shoot
- Teaches the other 3 guys to get into a passing lane and finish
- First pass must be adjacent, next passes can skip etc
- Rotate at each corner of the field and continue
3v2 or 4v3 2 man drill teach player 2 man concepts while working on GB's and stickwork under pressure
- Have the team split up into two colors
- Setup in 3 lines around the cage (at the 20 meters)
- Coach is setup with balls at the top of the box
- GB is rolled out to either of the 3 lines
- You then run a front side 2 man and get the ball to the back side ASAP
- last guy to touch is out and the other 2 drop back in on defense
- Can do this as a pregame drill
Rondo Drill to transition drill
- Sacred Heart calls this the Loyola drill
- Have goalie, 3 attack, 3 defense in goal
- At the midline, send in 3 v 2 or 3 v 3 middies, pass the ball around in the middle, hit the coach with the ball, coach starts the transition into 6 v 5 or 6 v 6
