10 Min Over The Shoulder Passing and Angle Drill

A good drill for your goalies to get good reps on passing for clears, your outside guys getting over the shoulder passes and the inside guys to learn how to get proper passing angles as well as down field for fast break opportunities.

  • A goalie, and 2 lines of players to one side of the goal

Ground Ball - 3-Man Box Drill

http://www.laxpower.com/laxnews/news.php?story=45941

Depending on the number of players and coaches, this drill can be run concurrently at least two places on the field or as a station. The 'box' is 15 yards wide, 20 yards long, outlined with cones. This is a quick drill designed to do the following:

  1. Have the players locate the loose ball
  2. Battle 1v1 for the ground ball
  3. Immediately go to 1v1 offense and defense
  4. Look up and quickly move the ball

There are three players in the drill. Players 2 and 3 start at the two top cones facing outside into the box. Their backs are turned away from the ball, which is rolled out gently into the box by Player 1. The concept is that the entire ground ball and 1v1 portion of the drill take place in the box defined by the cones. Players 2 and 3 have to locate the ground ball and battle for possession. Player 1, who initially rolled out the ball, turns and has to run 10 yards and then return close to the line or his starting point.

Once a player has possession, it becomes a one-on-one offense and defense drill, all in the defined box. When Player 1 begins to return close to the starting point, he calls for a pass from the player with possession. If the ground ball is picked up quickly, and Player 1 has not yet run all the way around a cone 10 yards away, the offensive player with the ball must dodge or get free to make the pass. Player 2 or 3 gets possession, dodges, and looks up to return a quick pass to Player 1 returning on the run to catch. It is game-realistic and fun.

And immediately the next three are up, and we go again. Each rep should be under 10 seconds, so we can have a lot of repetitions and touches.

Face Off Basics

  • Hands on the stick should be shoulder width apart
  • 2 stances
    • athletic stance: left foot close to the line, right foot or knee a foot behind the ball
    • Knee down: left foot on the line, put your knee down head towards the ball, knee is about a foot behind the ball, elbow touching your right knee down leg
  • Right Hand Crushes, Left hand is for speed - two choices (low and hard, up and hard)
  • Turn your whole body when you crush and power clamp
  • If you lose the clamp:
    • Jam - Don't go for the Ball push head with your shaft and shaft rack it out
    • Laser - Turn your head sweep the ball out under the clamp
    • Fish Hook - Neutral Grip (right hand not over the top, regular throwing position) and Standing, Separate your hands, put the left hand down on the ground, move your right hand stick and use the plastic to lift straight up

This drill is useful for a guy getting a ground ball and dodging to get to open space. Teaches a kid how to read his defender to make the proper dodge.

  • Divide kids into groups of 4
  • Have them all line up with about 3 yards in between
  • The first guy in line is to be about 5 yards away and receives a ground ball to from the 2nd guy in line
  • The first guy scoops it up and zig zags through the remaining 3 defenders
  • The defenders throw wrap, poke, lift, or high checks but only mimic checks
  • Offensive guy must read the defender and make a dodge
  • The 2nd guy inline is now the first he pops out and receives a pass from the guy who just had the ball
  • When the new 1st guy has the ball he passes it to the new 2nd guy, and the 2nd guy rolls the new 1st guy the ball and the drill starts over

10 Min John Hopkins 3v2 Challenge

Great competition drill that teaches soft hands on offense and quick ball movement.

  • Have the kids split up with dark vs light
  • Have each team run for 5 minutes in offense and defense and keep track of who wins
  • Setup 5 cones around the goal, the cones are in a star pattern with the top of the star at the top of the goal about 10 yards away
  • Have the defense on the back 2 cones behind the net
  • Have the offense on the top 3 cones
  • Place a goalie in the net and use tennis balls
  • Coach throws a ball to an offensive player and it turns into a 3v2
  • Defense has to adjust to the man and talk to stop the ball from going in the net

The losing team has to do extra pushups or sprints
