Stacked Sliding Drill
Teaching kids defensive slide sets is important but difficult to implement in a game due to the chaos. An important principle for defenders to learn is how to slide and recover.
- 4 offensive players in the four corners
- Put a goalie in cage and put 3 defenders stacked in a straight lin in the middle of from the crease
- Assign a number 1,2,3 to each of the defenders or call out their names
- The offense should move the ball, keep spacing, and shoot only off a pass across the crease or skip pass
- The defense will have to come out and slide to the ball and recover. The coach calls a number 1,2,3 and the designated player with that number is the player who must make the slide and recover
- As the ball is passed, a coach calls another different number and the assigned player slides aggressively to the ball.
- The first defender recovers to the inside hole, stick to the inside and in the passing lane, with head up looking for the next dangerous guy
Rules of Sliding - when you initiate a slide it needs to be done with the proper technique
- Slide to where he's going, not to where he's been - anticipate the path of the driving attackman
- Breakdown on arrival - be ready to play solid defense - knees bent, back straight, balls of feet
- Stay in front of the Attacker - the on-ball defender is forcing the player down the side of the field, stay in front of the ball carrier
- Slide man stays on the ball - Once a defender initiates a slide, he must go, and once there he is now responsible for that man, the original defender recovers to the crease
- Original ball defender recovers to the crease to pickup open man - if the slide is effective in making the attacker peel away the original on ball defender should recover to the crease
- Lead with the stick, follow with the body - After leading with the stick, you’ll follow through with your body lowering the shoulder to make contact.

3 Person Slides
The goal of this drill is to have your defense talk and do 1 and 2 position slides
- Place a goalie in goal
- The drill turns into 3 on 3
- Create 4 lines of defense and offensive players (8 total lines) around the goal, 1 line at each corner just outside the box
- Create a 5th line of offensive and defensive players to play in the crease
- Place two piles of balls at each of the top corners
- An offensive and defensive player runs into the crease
- Ball starts at one of the top corners, the offensive player with the ball goes 1 on 1
- If he beats his man, the crease defender slides, offensive player looks to pass it to the crease
- The offensive player behind and diagnal from where the drill starts runs towards GLE
- The 2nd defenseman slides and covers the crease
- Coach should emphasize two slides
