Time Defense Clinic
3 Min How to properly hold a long pole
  • Bottom hand on the shaft, lock it, near the pocket of, the other hand should be a little more than hip away
  • Lock the bottom arm, feet in athletic position

10 Min GB Scoop and Roll back, long pass to opposite side
  • Used to teach rolling back on clears
10 Min Checks for Defensemen
  • Can Opener - thread through his hands and as he gets closer lift up and dislodge the ball, make sure your stepping with him
  • Pop & Chop - When an attacker is low and you are in your strong hand, as he is drives towards you, push him back, as he's going back, lift or chop the bottom hand
  • Trail Check - Works on an inside roll, keep the stick on the inside shoulder, as the stick head is visible, come down on the stick
10 Min Approach and Knock Down
  • Put a line of defenders on the crease
  • Have a cone 8 by 8 yards out
  • Coach top center and to the left/right of a goal
  • Defensive players approaches the cone, big big little little, on an arc, taking away half of field
  • Returns back with stick up and tries to intercept a pass
10 Min Random Drill
  • To practice reacting to kids (if you can't cut the field in half)
  • Two cones about 10 yards away
  • Coach behind drops a cone or points
  • Ball dodger goes to the side the coach places cone or points
  • Whistle one, releases defender, second whistle attacker attacks the cone
  • Work on approach, stance, hands on him, push hips
  • Do reps without sticks and with sticks
  • Stance is important, stay low, put hands on hips and drive down the alley

5 Min Long Pole - Offball - Be in the correct position
  • Have 3 offensive guys, 1 defensive guy
  • Offensive guys are top of box, wing, and X
  • Defensive guy swiveling his head, starts at his landmark, then follows the ball to help
  • When it gets to his guy at X, he approaches and gets stick on hands

10 Min 2v2 Cylinder Approaches

Good drill to help the defense with their approaches to the ball.

  • Have defensive players pair up
  • Group 4 defensive players together
  • Have two outside players about 15-20 yards apart
  • Put a line of cones down the middle, each of the side guys are 5-10 yards from the cones
  • Put two defenders in the middle, one covers the man with the ball, the other with his foot on the line, but towards the other offensive guy
  • A man passes to the next, defense must adjust and give a lift check, The other defender runs to the mid line
  • After the lift check the defense stops engaging, player makes the pass, defense adjusts again
  • Far Defense guy keeps their stick up looking to intercept passes



10 Min Wind Up 1v1s
  • Use Swax lax and Goalie
  • 3 groups of 6 cones, middle and wings inside the box, and 3 lower cones
  • Defense starts on the center cone, takes a ball and passes to an offensive player
  • Defensive works on approach, driving down the alley and approaching at an angle, in the middle force him to weak hand
    • Defensive must pick a side, and get stick on hands with long pole
  • Offensive player tries to turn the corner to get behind the defender, doing an S dodge
  • Offensive player looks to pick a direction and dodging techniques
    • Going underneath wind up face dodge, or spin move (long pole)
    • Go over the top to the center, wind up hitch, then change direction towards the goal\
    • Get stick to the middle of the field after the dodge
    • If slapped, roll dodge to the goal




10 Min Survivor Drill
  • 3 v 3, one guy at x, two guys up top
  • Start with an alley dodge
  • Force the slide, second slide, recover
  • Ball gets to X, Slide and double, etc
  • Teach the defenders how to get beat and recover say the term "away"
  • Play at 3 quarters speed
  • Once all 3 offensive guys dodge it turns into a 3 v 3
